The laboratory that produces Aero-OM, a widely used newborn drug known as the "baby addiction", is studying the possibility of withdrawing alcohol from its composition after the issue has been approached by several pediatricians in Coimbra , reports Lusa.

Aero-OM drops, used to fight cramping gases in infants, contain about 10 percent alcohol (10 degrees) in its composition, according to the summary of drug characteristics provided by the laboratory to the National Institute of Pharmacy and Medication (INFARMED). According to the deputy director general of OM Portugal - the laboratory that produces the drug in the country - an "improved formula" should be launched by the end of the year.
"Several tests are underway to, if possible, completely withdraw the alcohol or at least substantially reduce its amount," he explained to Lusa José Santos.
The decision to review the Aero-OM formula was taken after the laboratory received "some feedback" that pediatricians in Coimbra had questioned the fact that the drug had alcohol, not included in the package leaflet that accompanies the drug ) or in the most accessible publications to clinicians of consultation of drugs available in the market (Therapeutic Symposium and National Therapeutic Index).
For the person in charge of OM, however, it is not "pertinent to raise the issue" because "the amount of alcohol is negligible". "The concentration of alcohol per dose is about half of the safety limit and one hundred times below the maximum limit allowed," explained José Santos.
However, the Deputy Director-General has admitted that, in psychological terms, the question of alcohol in an infant formula can be raised.
